The USB 3.0 specification guarantees an increased performance of 10 times compared to the capabilities of the current USB 2.0, providing a bandwidth of 600 MB/s second.
Performance comparison: Transfer of 25GB HD movie: USB 1.1: 9.3 hours
USB 2.0: 13.9 minutes
USB 3.0: 70 seconds
The new 3.0 connectors and cables will be physically and functionally compatible with hardware from the older specs. Of course, you won’t be able to maximize your bandwidth unless you’re using a USB 3.0 cable with Superspeed devices and ports, but at least plugging a 3.0 cable into a 2.0 port won’t blow up your PC.
Currently there are no OS available in the market which supports USB 3.0 and even the upcoming version of Windows i.e. Windows 7 will not support USB 3.0 though Microsoft may add support for it later on via Windows Update
